[Caption] "What are my copyright obligations as a Higher Degree Research student?"
[James] Hi and welcome to AIRS Matters.
I'm your host, James.
As I've been working on my thesis, I've been gathering all sorts of images, tables and other materials.
My supervisor asked if I considered the copyright implications of including others materials in my work.
So I'm here with Katya who is the university Copyright Officer.
Katya, what do I need to keep in mind when I'm including others materials?
[Katya Henry, University Copyright Officer] Sure, so Higher Degree Research students need to provide a copy of their thesis to QUT ePrints to be made available online.
And you are the copyright owner of your thesis.
If you are using other people's material though, you will need to receive permission.
So under Australian copyright law you're entitled to use other people's material for research of study purposes, but if we make it available online we do need to have those permissions.
And that's your responsibility to gain those prior to submitting the final version of your thesis.
And that will allow you to use any of these graphs or images or tables in your thesis.
However, if are unable to receive those permissions you can still make your thesis available online
[James] Is there somewhere I would be able to find this information online?
[Katya] Sure, I can show you some guidance on the QUT Copyright Guide and some details about how you go about doing that.
[James] Perfect.
[Instructional screencast]
[Katya] To find the QUT Copyright Guide, simply type in "copyright guide" into the search bar.
And there you will see it right at the top.
And you'll find general information, information on teaching, study or research, publishing or performing.
So you just want to select publishing.
And then if you scroll down here to QUT ePrints.
You will find all the information you need about submitting your thesis and any copyright requirements.
And here are the copyright guidelines for further information.
[End instructional screencast]
[James] If my thesis is on QUT ePrints can I still publish articles based on my thesis.
[Katya] That's a great question James.
So, as far as most publishers are concerned, your thesis, even if it's available on QUT ePrints doesn't constitute a prior publication.
Most journals are more than happy and expect you to publish out of your thesis.
But if you have any concerns, check the publisher's website for information about theses or dissertations or feel free to ask your Liaison Librarian for some help.
[James] Thanks, now I feel more confident in incorporating copyrighted materials into my thesis, as well as publishing articles based on my thesis.
